LeBron has a new tag for his thirteenth signature shoe: Designed to the specifications of four-time MVP, LeBron James… and his kids.
On Sunday, September 27, the eyes of the sneaker and apparel worlds descended on The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall for the unveiling of Nike and LeBron’s latest flagship shoe, the LEBRON 13. Their signature shoe launch event, which Nike hosts every year, was brought to Akron to pay homage to the LEBRON 13’s design legacy:
The LEBRON 13 design inspiration reflects James’s hometown roots in Akron, Ohio. Unique elements to each colorway come to life in five locations on each shoe: tongue top, tongue embellishment, heel tab, Swoosh graphic and inside heel. Additional nods to James come through specific details in each colorway, including outsole elements and a LeBron logo on the toe and heel tab (Nike News, 9/27/2015)
Separated by nearly 2,500 miles, Akron and Beaverton found neighborly commonality in their passion for children. Nike invited over 2,000 Akron area students and fans from Akron Rec Centers, St. Vincent – St. Mary High School, Cleveland Cavaliers season ticket holders, and LeBron’s Wheels for Ed and Akron I PROMISE Network to their exclusive event.
The highlight of the night for the LeBron James Family Foundation was the announcement of its own signature LEBRON 13. Development for the Foundation shoe, which came at LeBron’s request, began on Sunday. As guests were filing into E.J. Thomas Hall, 20 representatives from LeBron’s Wheels for Education, Akron I PROMISE Network, and 330 Ambassador Programs convened for a special design session with Nike’s top LeBron apparel and shoe wear designers, including lead designer, Jason Petrie.
From color theory to brand inspiration, LeBron’s kids and Nike’s top designers worked hand-in-hand to create the shoe’sinitial concept. The session was interrupted when their new client, LeBron, dropped by to see their progress. After a quick hello his designers quickly went back to work, “Wow, you guys are incredible” said a jaw-dropped LeBron as he inspected sketches. The Foundation’s LEBRON 13 is scheduled to hit store shelves in 2016.
